[www.keralites.net] Great Tips from Nutritional Expert

Great Tips from a Nutrition Expert
We asked a nutrition expert to provide our readers with some important health tips and information they may not be already aware of. This is what she had to say:
1. Defrosting, any defrosting, must be gradual.. From the freezer to the fridge, and not directly to the outside.
2. Plastic work surfaces accumulate bacteria. They must be soaked in water with vinegar, and I highly recommend using wooden work surfaces, as they contain natural disinfectant materials.
3. There is almost NO difference in milk fat %. Drinking milk is always 3%. 0% milk is only milk water (the water created in process of making cream, cheese or butter).
4. If you want to freeze fruit, it's a good idea to pour sugar on them before they are frozen to preserve their taste.
5. When preparing dough, please use cold water during winter, and ice water during summer. That way the dough will rise to its maximal height.
6. The sugar leaf is the sweetest plant in the world.. It is 30 times sweeter than sugar with zero calories. 1/3 of a leaf can sweeten a cup of coffee or tea. It can be bought at health stores as an extract.
7. The difference between Margarine and plastic is one molecule! The margarine contains transfats that do not melt in your arteries.
8. Corn and lettuce are mostly undigested by the body.
9.. Eggshells are 100% calcium. If you have plants, a good idea is to water them with water mixed with eggshells.
10. Wines:
Red wine: Not to use more than 8 hours after the bottle has been opened.
White wine: Keep cold and do not use 10-12 hours after the bottle has been opened.
11. Those of you who are addicted to white sugar - Eat something out of whole wheat flour slowly and the need will die down.
12. Black olives, when in cans, are not black olives but blackened olives. 10. True olive oil is golden, not green. The greener, the more food colorings in it and other food stuffs that you don't need.
14. Honey that flows is not real bee honey. Real honey hardens and stays that way until heated up.
15. Puff pastry contains huge amounts of fat - I don't recommend it. But if you do make it, do NOT freeze it.
16. Sugar and alcohol never freeze.
17. Strawberries grown in the field is a magnet for insects and pesticides, not recommended.
18. Ground black pepper you buy at the supermarket is not pepper. Only buy those that are grounded in front of you.
19. Yellow cheese is the melting down of leftover hard white cheeses, with the addition of yellow food stuffs made out of coal and considered one of the most dangerous food stuff. It causes allergies, hyperactivity (mainly for kids) and is generally bad for your health.
20. Artificial Sweetners = Poison.
21. A teaspoon of sugar holds on 13-16 calories.
22. When storing eggs, keep them away from other products and never in the origial carton. If you can't put them in the door, then put them in the top shelf of the refrigerator, where it's warmer, and away from other products, especially cooked meat, chicken or fish.
23. Do not rinse eggs unless you plan to use them immediately!

[www.keralites.net] ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. A joint is the area where two bones meet. There are over 100 different types of arthritis.
Causes
Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage. Normal cartilage protects a joint and allows it to move smoothly. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, such as when you walk. Without the normal amount of cartilage, the bones rub together. This causes, swelling (inflammation), and stiffness.
Joint inflammation may result from:
An autoimmune disease (the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue)
Broken bone
General "wear and tear" on joints
Infection, usually by bacteria or virus
In most cases, the joint inflammation goes away after the cause goes away or is treated. Sometimes it does not. When this happens, you have chronic arthritis. Arthritis may occur in men or women. Osteoarthritis is the most common type.
Other, more common types of arthritis include:
Ankylosing spondylitis
Crystal arthritis, gout, pseudogout
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (in children)
Bacterial infections
Psoriatic arthritis
Reactive arthritis (Reiter syndrome)
Rheumatoid arthritis (in adults)
Scleroderma
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Symptoms
Arthritis causes joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited movement. Symptoms can include:
Joint pain
Joint swelling
Reduced ability to move the joint
Redness and warmth of the skin around a joint
Joint stiffness, especially in the morning

Exams and Tests
The health care provider will perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history.
The physical exam may show:
Fluid around a joint
Warm, red, tender joints
Difficulty moving a joint (called "limited range of motion")
Some types of arthritis may cause joint deformity. This may be a sign of severe, untreated rheumatoid arthritis.
Blood tests and joint x-rays are often done to check for infection and other causes of arthritis.
Your doctor may also remove a sample of joint fluid with a needle and send it to a lab to be checked.
Treatment
The goal of treatment is to reduce pain, improve function, and prevent further joint damage. The underlying cause often cannot be cured.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Lifestyle changes are the preferred treatment for osteoarthritis and other types of joint swelling. Exercise can help relieve stiffness, reduce pain and fatigue, and improve muscle and bone strength. Your health care team can help you design an exercise program that is best for you.
Exercise programs may include:
Low-impact aerobic activity (also called endurance exercise)
Range of motion exercises for flexibility
Strength training for muscle tone
Your health care provider may suggest physical therapy. This might include:
Heat or ice
Splints or orthotics to support joints and help improve their position; this is often needed for rheumatoid arthritis
Water therapy
Massage
Other things you can do include:
Get plenty of sleep. Sleeping 8 to 10 hours a night and taking naps during the day can help you recover from a flare-up more quickly, and may even help prevent flare-ups.
Avoid staying in one position for too long.
Avoid positions or movements that place extra stress on your sore joints.
Change your home to make activities easier. For example, install grab bars in the shower, the tub, and near the toilet.
Try stress-reducing activities, such as meditation, yoga, or tai chi.
Eat a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, which contain important vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin E.
Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as cold water fish (salmon, mackerel, and herring), flaxseed, rapeseed (canola) oil, soybeans, soybean oil, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts.
Avoid excessive alcohol and smoking.
Apply capsaicin cream over your painful joints. You may feel improvement after applying the cream for 3 to 7 days.
Lose weight, if you are overweight. Weight loss can greatly improve joint pain in the legs and feet.
MEDICINES
Medicines may be prescribed along with lifestyle changes. All medicines have some risks. You should be closely followed by a doctor when taking arthritis medicines.
Over-the-counter medicines:
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is often the first medicine tried. Take up to 4000 mg a day (two arthritis-strength Tylenol every 8 hours). To prevent damage to your liver, do not take more than the recommended dose. Since multiple medications are available without a prescription that also contain acetaminophen, you will need to include them in the 4000 mg per day maximum. Also, avoid alcohol when taking acetaminophen.
Aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that can relieve arthritis pain. However, they can carry risks when used for a long time. Possible side effects include heart attack, stroke, stomach ulcers, bleeding from the digestive tract, and kidney damage.
Prescription medicines:
Biologics are used for the treatment of autoimmune arthritis. They include etanercept (Enbrel), infliximab (Remicade), adalimumab (Humira), abatacept (Orencia), rituximab (Rituxan), golimumab (Simponi), certolizumab (Cimzia), and tocilizumab (Actemra). These drugs can improve the quality of life for many patients, but can have serious side effects.
Corticosteroids ("steroids") help reduce inflammation. They may be injected into painful joints or given by mouth.
Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are used to treat autoimmune arthritis. They include methotrexate, sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine, and leflunomide.
Immunosuppressants such as azathioprine or cyclophosphamide are used to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis when other medications have not worked.
For gout, allopurinol (Zyloprim) or febuxostat (Uloric) may be used to lower uric acid.
It is very important to take your medicines as directed by your doctor. If you are having problems doing so (for example, because of side effects), you should talk to your doctor. Also make sure your doctor knows about all the medicines you are taking, including vitamins and supplements bought without a prescription.
SURGERY AND OTHER TREATMENTS
In some cases, surgery may be done if other treatments have not worked. This may include:
Joint replacement, such as a total knee joint replacement
Outlook (Prognosis)
A few arthritis-related disorders can be completely cured with proper treatment.
Most forms of arthritis however are long-term (chronic) conditions.
Possible Complications
Complications of arthritis include:
Long-term (chronic) pain
Disability
Difficulty performing daily activities
When to Contact a Medical Professional
Call your doctor if:
Your joint pain persists beyond 3 days.
You have severe unexplained joint pain.
The affected joint is significantly swollen.
You have a hard time moving the joint.
Your skin around the joint is red or hot to the touch.
You have a fever or have lost weight unintentionally.
Prevention
Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent joint damage. If you have a family history of arthritis, tell your doctor, even if you do not have joint pain.
Avoiding excessive, repeated motions may help protect you against osteoarthritis.

[www.keralites.net] STOP EATING WATER MELON THE WRONG WAY

Stop Eating Water Melon The Wrong Way! How To Eat It Right And The Health Benefits You Get!
You been eating watermelons wrong your whole life? Maybe you have, read this to find out!
Did your mom ever tell you not to swallow the seeds in a watermelon? She most likely did at some point in time; it's what everyone says. Even though now that I'm grown, and I know that is not true, I still split out the seeds. I'm not sure why I still do but maybe I should stop because watermelon seeds are full of wonderful nutrients we need, such as B vitamins, protein, fats, magnesium, and iron.
Watermelon seeds have vitamins in them they are essential for our body to function correctly. Without them, our bodies would have improper digestion, slower brain functions, and irregular heartbeat. Some of these victims like folate and niacin help our body lower cholesterol and turn food into energy that reduces our risk of many diseases.
Protein is sometimes hard to find large amounts proteins in foods, but just one cup of dried watermelon seeds has more than 30 grams of protein. This kind of protein is made up of amino acids that help regulate blood pressure.
They also have large amounts of fats including omega-6 fatty acids that are also good for your blood pressure. Although some of these fats are good for you, watermelon seeds are also high in calories which can be a downside.
Again another great nutrient is magnesium it also helps regulate your blood pressure. Just one cup of seeds will be a half of your recommended daily intake. The iron in the seeds helps cure fatigue in most people. Another great thing about iron is it carries oxygen to your brain.
