NGO Kalam Arakkattala  - Fancy Growing a Forest? Here's How an NGO Did It in Just One Year

NGO Kalam Arakkattala has achieved a rather amazing feat. In one year, they have managed to grow a forest. Yes, you read that right!

Kulleygoundapalayam, near Avinashi, on the outskirts of Coimbatore, is sure to leave you spell-bound. This is thanks to an unusually dense green patch of land in the village. This small forest has been grown on a 22-cent plot of land with the support of local villagers.

The NGO achieved this through the Miyawaki method, which was put forth by Akira Miyawaki. Miyawaki is a Japanese botanist and ecologist, who has been planting forests along the coastline of Japan to protect it from Tsunamis and soil erosion.

The 89-year-old has spent his entire life promoting native forests and has already planted over 40 million trees in more than 15 countries.

"We wanted to set up an ecological system, where animals, reptiles, birds and insects find space for all of their activities right from feeding to roosting. The plant species we selected were mostly native. Many are fruit-bearing, like Indian fig, tulip, pomegranate, guava and water apple," said one of the founders of the NGO, in a report in The Times of India.

A youth from the village told the publication, "Even we did not expect this much growth after just a year. As the trees have such a dense growth, it is not easy for people to enter the forest. We have found many reptiles including snakes inside Adarvanam. Some birds have set up nests and even laid eggs."

Many in India have adopted this method. One such successful adoptee is Shubhendu Sharma, who left his high paying job as an engineer to plant trees for the rest of his life.

Using the unique Miyawaki methodology to grow saplings, Afforestt, which is the organisation started by Shubhendu, converts any land into a self-sustainable forest in a couple of years. He has successfully created 33 forests across India in two years.

[www.keralites.net] Why you should drink more tea and less coffee

Why You Should Drink More Tea (and Less Coffee)
It's safe to say that most people you ask will say that if they had to choose between tea and coffee, they would choose coffee hands down. This may be because its rich taste and high caffeine content gives us a boost that keeps us going. However, most of the time you should drop that cup of Joe and pick up a cup of hot and fragrant tea, and we'll tell you why!
tea and coffee
1. Tea Hydrates the Body
Although coffee is also considered a hydrating liquid, tea has the added benefit of being hot water with tea flavoring. This means that it is much more beneficial to sit down and have a cup of tea because the beverage hydrates your body immediately. With coffee, it take time for the water to be absorbed because it so well mixed.
2. Serious Health Benefits
In a number of scientific studies it has been shown that tea can reduce the chances of certain kinds of cancers and diseases. This fact mostly applies for green tea, which has been glorified in many areas of Asia as the reason for their lean figure and better bill of health. Coffee does have some beneficial antioxidants, but not any more than a cup of tea can provide.
3. Tea Keeps You Going Longer
The adamant coffee drinker will interject here that tea may be healthier than coffee, but it can't compare when it comes to caffeine levels. This it seems is actually a myth. It has been shown that tea has the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but unlike coffee, tea does not have such a drastic energy depressing effect.
When you drink coffee, you get a large and quick dose of caffeine that causes your energy levels to drop at the same speed. Tea, however, has just as much caffeine, but because it is absorbed slower, energy depression will take place over a longer period of time. If you need a drink to keep going throughout the day, drink tea instead of coffee.

4. More Antioxidant Power
The other thing an avid coffee drinker might tell you is that coffee has more and better antioxidants than tea. It appears that this too is a myth. Companies now put good antioxidants into things like tea to improve their health benefits, so it is uncertain that coffee has more antioxidants than tea.
5. Tea is a Great Weight loss Tool
Recent Research has shown that green tea may be a tremendous aid in weight loss. This is due to the fact that green tea helps kick-start your metabolism, but also that it is a much healthier substitute than sugar soft drinks. In comparison to any drink with added sugar, even coffee, tea is less likely to remain on your waistline, especially if you drink it with honey or a bit of sugar.
6. Dental Health
To be honest, excessive amounts of tea and coffee aren't good for your dental health, especially not for the whiteness of your teeth. However, if you must choose the lesser of the two evils, it is best to choose tea. Drinking a cup or two a day of tea will keep your levels of fluoride normal without any discoloration, while a few cups of coffee means even less fluoride and more discoloration.
7. Aids Bone Health
In a new Australian study it was found that people who drank tea on a regular basis had stronger bones and were less likely to develop osteoporosis thanks to high levels of tea catechins. A separate study found that drinking tea could too promote healthy bone formation. There aren't any positive things to say about coffee and bones, in fact your grandmother probably told you that drinking coffee too early could stunt your growth!
8. Helps Reduce Stress
Ahhh...That's the best word to describe the feeling of drinking a hot cup of tea. Unlike coffee that makes you jittery and puts you on high alert, tea soothes and relaxes your brain. There must be a reason why it is used by so many cultures as a bonding tool!
9. Give Your Immune System a Boost!
Although tea will most likely not cure you of the flu, it flushes the bug out of your system and will improve your immune system so you won't get sick in the future. This also depends on what kind of tea you are drinking. One cup of regular Earl Grey tea most likely won't do you much good, but a cup of ginger or honey and lemon tea will do the trick!
So remember the many health benefits of tea, next time you think about pouring yourself a cup of Joe!

[www.keralites.net] PRANAYAMA

7 Step Breathing Techniques Of Pranayama Yoga
Get a fresh breath of life. This time, forget the gym, the treadmill and the diets. Try yogic breathing or pranayama!
Baba Ramdev has immortalized the technique of yogic breathing or pranayama, thanks to his early morning shows on Aastha channel. In 2003, the entire nation breathed in his words like a sermon and an entire generation of people was hooked on to his 7 step pranayama. Yogic breathing exercises have been proven beneficial in curing respiratory illnesses, sinusitis, stress, digestive problems, uterine troubles, obesity, heart ailments and a host of other conditions. Apart from that it strengthens the abdominal and chest muscles, paves the way for some serene meditation. For many, it put them into the habit of waking early and watching Baba Ramdev at work on the TV.
Many of us may be uninspired to practice yoga in daily life, wary of the complicated postures and the fact that it cannot be learnt properly unless instructed by a yoga master. These 7 steps of Pranayama, however, are simple, quick and can be easily practiced. The whole procedure takes only 45 min, though it can be extended according to one's comfort. Rise early, bathe, wear loose and comfortable clothes, sit down on the floor; straight backed and erect, in the cozy comfort of your home and get going.
Step 1: Bhastrika pranayama
Breathe in through both the nostrils, till the lungs are full and diaphragm is stretched. Then breathe out gently. Take deep breaths and then completely breathe out. Continue for 2-5 min. One page is insufficient to elucidate the benefits of deep breathing, which most of us already know very well. The influx of oxygen refreshes the muscles and prepares the body for exercise. While doing this, I also felt myself drifting into a calm meditative temperament, which eased my stress and tension.
Step 2: Kapal Bhati Pranayama
Steady your breathing and while exhaling, sharply push the air out forcefully. Relax. Inhaling takes place on its own as the stomach distends back to normal. Repeat at least 30 times or up to a minute for starters. Later you may advance to 5-10 min. By the end of a kapal bhati session, I could already feel my abdominals and throat tightened. Initially my sneezing problem got aggravated by Kapal Bhati so I had to keep a handkerchief at close quarters. But with practice, this technique works wonders for respiratory problems and blocked nose. It is tricky and it takes a little time to master it. Baba Ramdev has said that this pranayama is an all in one cure & that it helps alleviate obesity, gastrointestinal diseases, uterus problems, diabetes, cholesterol, allergies, asthma, snoring, and aids concentration. However, it is contraindicated for hypertension and heart patients.
Step 3: Bahaya Pranayama
Breathe air out completely, touch your chin to your chest, squeeze your stomach fully and hold this position for a while. A tip is to hold your breath while you let your stomach contract.. Then release your chin and breathe in slowly. Repeat the process 3-5 times. You may advance gradually up to 20 repetitions. It is claimed to heal hernia, stomach ailments, uterus prolapse and all urinary and prostate problems. You may feel some pain in the upper part of the sternum or have some difficulty in holding your breath, when you're starting off with pranayama. Again, people with hypertension and heart problems should avoid this step.
Step 4: Anulom Vilom Pranayama
It is probably the simplest step; at least it was so for me. Hold your right nostril with thumb and breathe in from the left. Now release the thumb and exhale from the right nostril while closing the left nostril with the middle and ring finger. Breathe in from right nostril. Now close it with your thumb as described previously and exhale from the left nostril. Easy? Repeat the steps for a duration of 10 min. Make sure you expand your chest while breathing, and not the stomach. Do this step slowly and do not hurry.
Step 5: Bharamari Pranayama
Close ears with thumb, with the index finger on the forehead, and the rest three on the base of the nose touching the eyes. Breathe in completely and deeply. Now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee. Repeat it for 10 min. It alleviates tension, hypertension, heart ailments, paralysis, migraine, and improves confidence & concentration.
Step 6: Udggeth Pranayama
Inhalation and exhalation should be long, slow, soft and subtle. Inhale slowly and when ready to exhale, chant Om slowly and steadily. With practice, lengthen the entire procedure to last one minute or more. Visualize the breath entering and moving inside the body. Repeat for 10 min. This is good for insomnia, deepening the quality of sleep and relieving nightmares. It helps you focus steadfast on to any task at hand. For me, it improved my Kabaddi playing!
Step 7: Pranav pranayama
Close your eyes and sit quietly. Breathe in naturally for 2-3 min or more. At this point, your body has prepared your mind for a tranquil meditative posture. Revel in the feeling and realize your spiritual calling. This delightful end result is the gift of the above 6 steps.
Pranayama is best practiced early in the morning when the air is still fresh and the stomach empty. Some people have even harnessed this science and art to lose weight. Who knows what it may do for you!
