[www.keralites.net] MESSAGE OF BLOOD

A Message of Blood
*************************

Still the wails and cries are fresh in my mind,
That erupted with every dead coming from ward;
But the imprints of humanity that I witnessed,
Will remain indelible in every corner of my heart.
No barriers of faith, status, caste and creed,
The patients and attendants formed one breed;
All ready for each other's help with utmost love,
I pray ,this affection may surround the entire world.
Among the donors of B negative blood for my sister,
If three were Muslims , then Hindus were four ;
When I thanked them for their benevolent gesture,
One Hindu student, delivered a universal message.
" If we learn to donate the blood for human life,
We all will forget to shed each other's blood ."
( My younger sister, 49 year old Shabina Sherwani died on 11 June in ICU of JNMC, Aligarh Muslim University after remaining on ventilator for about two weeks. During this period ,I and all other members of my family remained by her side)

[www.keralites.net] HEALTH BENEFITS OF YOGURT

10 Unexpected Health Benefits of Yogurt.
Yogurt is a great food for us as it helps with digestion, gives us a good energetic feeling and tastes wonderful. But not many people know that it has many other benefits you may not know quite yet. After reading all of this I'm sure you'll start acting like me, and do your best to eat one cup of yogurt every day or two.

Protects your teeth:
The lactic acid in yogurt has a positive and protecting effect on your gums and teeth. It can help keep your teeth healthy and pretty and overcome the damages done by other foods and drinks, most commonly - coffee. It's important to note that although containing sugar, yogurt has no harmful effect on the enamel of your teeth.
Reduces allergy symptoms:
Those of us with seasonal allergies know how hard it can be to do anything when the symptoms start to appear, but a cup of yogurt might be an easy fix to this problem. The probiotics found in yogurt may decrease your body's reaction to pollen and other allergens, minimizing your allergic reaction.
Great pre or post workout snack:
Yogurt is rich on carbohydrates that can either help re-fuel you through out your workout, or replace the energy lost after you are done. The potassium and sodium found in it can also help replace those electrolytes you sweat out and keeps you feeling fresh even after a hard workout.
Fights the common cold:
The common cold will always be there, not much you can do about it. But there's still hope preventing it in time. Research proved that yogurt can strengthen your immune system, making your T-cells stronger and more active. They are more prone to beat the sickness out of you before it drags on too long.
Prevents yeast infections:
If you are given a prescription for antibiotics, you might want to consider yogurt to protect yourself. Using antibiotics usually raises the chances of yeast infections and the yogurt's active cultures can help balance pH levels and prevent this uncomfortable problem.

Reduces the risk of high blood pressure:
A recent study, conducted over the course of 15 years, revealed that 30% of volunteers that took at least 2% of their daily calorie intake from yogurt, were less likely to develop high blood pressure. That's only from 2%.
Helps prevent osteoporosis:
All milk and dairy products are in general a great source of calcium, and help build healthy bones. Look for yogurts with added vitamin D for an greater help in keeping your bones strong and healthy.
A great source of energy:
Aside from the energy provided by the carbohydrates in yogurt, it also contains B vitamins which are just what your body needs when you feel like you could use a little pick-me-up.
Builds muscle:
Yogurt contains all of the essential amino acids necessary to build muscle and other tissues in the body. It is a complete protein, which means it is also a welcome addition to our diet as they support all the necessary biological functions of the human body.
Helps you lose weight:
As stated in the last point, Yogurt helps build muscle and this means that it helps burn fat. The high amounts of protein will also help you stay fuller for longer periods of time while reducing your need for snacks and unhealthy foods.

So now that you know all of these amazing facts about yogurt, it's time to go out there and get some!
But what kind of yogurt should you get? I'd recommend:
Greek yogurt is a preferred kind, it is generally higher in protein and lower in sugar then other natural options.
You should also look for yogurt with live or active cultures, they are what improves the good bacteria in your gut.
Lastly, keep an eye open on the sugar content in your yogurt. Many kinds of yogurt contain added sugars and artificial sweeteners you do not want. Stick between 12-18 grams of natural sugar per serving and you're free to sit back and peacefully sit and enjoy a cup of the good stuff!

[www.keralites.net] MIGRAINE

Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder manifesting in the form
of a throbbing head ache with nausea, vomiting, and/or sensitivity
to light. If you or your loved one suffer from migraine, I have
compiled some remedies which you can try safely. Know that quick
treatment of migraine is a wise thing to do.
# Identify your triggers and avoid them. Sometimes it can just be
the weather, a drug or any food like , caffeine or chocolates.
# Do not depend on pain killers and have them for more than thrice
a week.
# Avoid white flour products, sugar, tinned or preserved foods.
Drink more water and eat more fibre, vegetables, whole grains, and
get vegetable proteins like beans, nuts, seeds, broccoli, spinach,
peas etc.
# Sit and stand in proper postures.
# Do not skip meals.
# Exercise but do not overdo it.
# Sleep and wake up at proper timings.
# Keep a headache diary which will help you to find your triggers
and help the doctor to choose his treatment plan.
# When you get a bad headache, lie down in a dark, quiet room. Put
a cold or hot compress on your forehead with a few drops of
lavender oil (if you are not allergic to its scent) in it. Massage
your scalp and apply pressure on your temples.
# Have chamomile tea.
# Start meditation and yoga. Pranayama including Shitali works the
best for migraine. You may also visit a therapist or a counselor
for stress management. Also, ask your doctor about cognitive
behavioral therapy.
# Make a habit of massaging your temples, neck and head when you
get a headache.
# Use peppermint oil to rub on your temples and on the tight
muscles on your neck and shoulders.

[www.keralites.net] 7 ways to lower your blood pressure without medication

7 Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure without Medication

1. Invest in a home blood pressure monitor.
It is wise to monitor your blood pressure at home, as well as your doctor's office. Combining your readings with your doctor's will provide a better measure of your high blood pressure and treatment to control it. Also, home monitoring will rule out if you suffer from "white coat hypertension". Ideally, monitor your blood pressure at the same time every day.
2. Increase your potassium intake.
Potassium works to balance out the sodium in your diet. An adequate potassium intake can lower systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Some good potassium sources include cantaloupe, bananas, dates, nuts, oranges, and green leafy vegetables. If you are taking diuretics (i.e. water pills) to lower blood pressure, the excess urination can cause loss of potassium for some diuretics.
3. Reduce caffeine intake.
Limit caffeine from tea, coffee, soda, sports drinks, and chocolate to maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Caffeine can lead to short, but significant increases in blood pressure.
4. Manage stress.
Coping strategies to deal with stress can promote high blood pressure levels, such as overeating, smoking, and increased alcohol consumption. Implement stress management strategies to avoid these pitfalls.
5. Eat a diet rich in magnesium.
Research has shown an inverse relationship between magnesium and blood pressure. Individuals with a high magnesium intake, typically have a low blood pressure. Some good sources of magnesium include peas, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, lima beans, squash, broccoli, spinach, and seafood. Learn more about and implement the DASH diet to consume adequate levels of potassium and magnesium daily. For greatest success, implement changes gradually versus all at once.
6. Get adequate sleep.
Research indicates insomnia may be linked to high blood pressure. Take steps to protect your sleep, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time every day (even on weekends), power down for one hour before bed (meaning no electronic devices), and have a regular bedtime ritual.
7. Lose weight.
Being overweight or obese increases your risk for high blood pressure. As you gain weight, your blood pressure tends to rise. Weight loss of only ten pounds can positively impact blood pressure levels. Overweight is defined as a BMI of 25 to 29.9 and obesity is a BMI equal to or greater than 30.
