[www.keralites.net] This is called the life management

A Young Man  Rama Swami Died An Untimely Death.

His Parents, Wife And Nine Year Old Son Were Crying Bitterly Sitting Next To His Dead Body.

They All Happened To Be Disciples Of A Holy Man Whom They Called 'Maharaj Ji'.

When Maharaj Ji Learnt That Rama Swami Had Died, He Came To Visit The Family.

He Entered The House And Found The Family Wailing Inconsolably.

Seeing Maharaj Ji, The Wife Started Crying Even Louder.

She Sobbed Saying, "Maharaj Ji, He Has Died Too Early, He Was So Young... Oh! I Would Do Anything To Make Him Alive Again. What Will Happen To Our Son? I'm So Helpless And Miserable."

Maharaj Ji Tried To Pacify The Crying Lady And The Old Parents, But The Loss Was Too Much For Them To Come To Terms With So Easily.

Eventually, Maharaj Ji Said, "Alright, Get Me A Glass Of Water."

Maharaj Ji Sat Near The Dead Body And Put The Glass Next To It. He Said, "Now, Who Ever Wants That Rama Swami Should Become Alive Again May Drink This Water. Rama Swami Shall Come Back To Life, But The Person Who Drinks The Water Shall Die Instead!"

Silence..!

"Come, Did You Not Say That Rama Swami Was The Sole Bread Winner Of The Family? Who Would die Instead Of Him? It Is A Case Of Fair Exchange, Isn't It?"

The Wife Looked At The Old Mother And The Old Mother Looked At The Wife. The Old Father Looked At Rama Swami's Son. But No One Came Forward...

Then Maharaj Ji Said To The Old Father, "Babuji, Wouldn't You Give Your Life For Your Son?"

The Old Man Said, "Well, I Have My Responsibility Towards My Wife. If I Die Who Will Look After Her? I Cannot Offer My Life To You."

Maharaj Ji  Looked Questioningly At The Old Woman And Said, "Amma?"

Amma Said, "My Daughter Is Due To Deliver Her First Baby. She Will Be Coming To Stay For A Month...If I Die Who Will Look After Her And The Newborn. Why Don't You Ask Rama Swami's Wife?"

Maharaj Ji Smiled And Looked At The Young Widow. She Widened Her Tear Filled Eyes And Said, "Maharaj Ji, I Need To Live For My Son...If I Die,Who Will Look After Him?  He Needs Me. Please Don't Ask Me To Do This Sacrifice.."

Maharaj Ji  Asked The son, "Well Little Boy, Would You Like To Give Your Life For Your Father?"

Before The Boy Could Say Anything, His Mother Pulled Him To Her Breast And Said,..

"Maharaj Ji, Are You insane?.. My Son Is Only Nine. He Has Not Yet Lived His Life. How Could You Even Think Or Suggest Such A Thing?"

Maharaj Ji  Said, "Well It Seems, That All Of You Are Very Much Needed For The Things You Need To Do In This World... It Seems Rama Swami Was The Only One That Could Be Spared...That Is Why God Chose To Take Him Away. So Shall We Now Proceed With His Last Rites?... It's Getting Late.."

Having Said That, Maharaj Ji Got Up And Left.

*Love Lasts As Long As Life Exists*
*The Rest Is Only Memories Of Happy Times..!*

*"Be honest when in trouble and be simple when in wealth. Be polite when in authority and be silent when in anger".*

[www.keralites.net] SIGNIFICANCE OF KANIKONNA

                                                                                                          SIGNIFICANCE OF KANIKONNA:-

vishu is "vaishnavam" in nature, that is why it is celebrated in vishnu krishna temples, in more predominant manner. The legend goes that goddess lakshmi devi opens her eyes, letting golden coins to shower upon the worshippers. "kanikkonna" represents the golden coins came out of "Lakshmi nethrangal"(eyes). The golden shower of the Cassia fistula brings another picture to my mind – the golden rain of the Amla fruits bestowed on the Brahmin lady by the Goddess Lakshmi, when Adi Sri Shankaracharya intercedes on her behalf and recites the Kanakadhara Stothram.

In addition to the twenty-two slokas of the Kanakadhara Stothram said to have been recited by Adi Sankaracarya, three slokas have been found in ancient palmyra leaves. Brahmasri Bhutapuri Subrahmanya Sarma has been instrumental in bringing them to one's notice. I quote one slokam as it corroborates the Golden Shower

Oh! Sri Maha Lakshmi who is adorning in the middle of the thousand petalled lotus in Bilva Vana, Holding Golden Lotuses in her hand, possessing golden hue colour. To her my Salutations.

When Thumba blooms its time for onam, and when Konna blooms its time for vishu. My mother used to tell me a story of Vishu which I want to share with you. During vishu yellow flowers called Konna Poo is offered to lord krishna while keeping vishu kani. These flowers have a story behind it.

STORY BEHIND KANNIKONNA:-

My Amma used to say when Thumba blooms its time for onam, and when Konna blooms its time for vishu. My mother used to tell me a story of Vishu which I want to share with you. During vishu yellow flowers called Konna Poo is offered to lord krishna while keeping vishu kani. These flowers have a story behind it.

Once in a small village a zamindar had employed a priest to do pooja in temple. The thirumeni daily comes to the temple with his son who is about five years old. while the priest performing his duties inside the temple, the son used to play around the premises of the temple. Everyday afternoon the father used to sleep in the frontyard of the temple and the boy used to play nearby. With his half closed eye he used to watch his son enjoying in playing. The fact was that unni krishnan used to come out of the temple and play with the little boy and so the boy was enjoyng and playing as if he is playing with group of boys, laughing, screaming, running. Once on the previous day of Vishu, the father cleaned the temple premises, tired and slept outside of the temple. He told his son to play nearby not to go far off and the boy was playing near his father. On that afternoon kutty krishnan gave his waist belt which was full of golden bells to the boy as the Vishu Kaineetum. The boy was very happy to receive, and while gazing at it, the zamindar saw the golden waistbelt of Krishna in the hands of the boy. He immediately called all villagers and declared that the father and son had stolen it. The father started crying and pleading that they have not stolen anything and he could not tolerate people calling his child a thief. He beat him and threw the chain out into the garden. The chain got stuck on a tree and the tree suddenly bloomed with yellow flowers. These flowers are called as konna poo which are even today offered to lord krishna in the vishu kani because it pleases lord krishna and reminds of his love for the small boy who was very dear to him.

Symbolism:-
Kanikonna is the state flower of Kerala. The lovely yellow flowers are used in Vishu Festival in the state. Gold shower flowers are used to adorn the Kani, with their bright yellow color, symbolizing Surya, the sun God, who is a symbol of ever flowing grace and auspiciousness. It is evident from religious the books that this flower was spread on every feet area of the state. Lord Vishnu once thought that this beauty should be spread in other parts of the country and he took the bunch of flowers and flew it in various directions. Since then various states of the country received this lovely and calm flower tree. It is also described in "Kalki Puran" that in last few centuries, this world will be covered with this tree and the beautiful yellow color will erase all the disputes. This golden flower only blooms when the sun is in its most exalted position astrologically—the month surrounding Vishu. In God's creations there is purpose in everything.

[www.keralites.net] SIGNIFICANCE OF VISHU

Vishu is derived from "Vishuvam" in Sanskrit and Malayalam, which means "equal". On the day of Vishu when the sun enters Medham rashi, the day is EQUAL to night. This means that the latitude of the place is the same as the declination of the sun. April 14th marks the new year in accordance with Kolla Varsham the Malayalam calendar. This occasion signifies the sun's transit into the Meda Rasi (first zodiac sign ) according to Indian astrological calculations, and represents the vernal equinox. Vishu marks the beginning of a new calendar year in Kerala. The principle behind the celebration of this festival lies in the fact that a good beginning paves the way to success. In fact, it is a day of supplication and surrender to that Supreme power we call God, without whose grace our limited faculties can achieve nothing. The two main rituals performed during Vishu are Vishukani and Vishukaineetam. Celebrations are majestic on Vishu. Bursting crackers, lighting lamps all over their houses, receiving blessings from the elders, greeting each others with sweets, new clothes and money to those younger than you, are the prime happenings during Vishu. People also wear kodi vastram (new clothes) on this day. Patassu (fire crackers) are burst in the midst of dancing and merry to mark the day.

The story behind Vishu:-

The origin of Vishu is elusive and obscure as there is lack of literature regarding it. The customs and traditions slightly vary from region to region with in Kerala itself as per the local values and customs. This makes its even more confusing not to mention the change in the attitude and life style of the people. But one Interesting myth is related to the demon king Ravana.

Legend has it that the Navgrahas were controlled by Ravana during his reign of Lanka. He had Shani imprisoned. It is said that Ravana was not impressed with Surya rising from the east and the rays falling on his palace without his permission.Ravana saw the intense heat produced by Surya as arrogance. Ravan decided go in for a war with Surya.A scared Surya agreed to not to shine on the palace of Ravana. This caused lot of difficulties for the people in the region. Surya arrived late daily and this caused havoc in nature. Crops were damaged. There was scarcity of food. Then Sri Ram defeated Ravana in the epic battle and Surya started rising from the east on time. Ravana had never allowed the Sun to rise straight from the East and after Ravana's death it was on a Vishu day, that the Sun started to rise from the East.

It is believed that people celebrate Vishu in remembrance of Sri Ram defeating Ravana and Surya appearing on time. The story just shows the importance of Sun in the lives of human beings on earth.

[www.keralites.net] PAPAYA FIGHTS CANCER

The gorgeous Fruit Papaya.... Make sure that you have some as often as possible. Read all about it.
Papaya was the only studied food found to halt breast cancer. Scientists studied 14 plant foods commonly consumed in Mexico to determine their ability to halt breast cancer cell growth. These included avocado, black sapodilla, guava, mango, prickly pear cactus (nopal), pineapple, grapes, tomato, and papaya. They also evaluated beta-carotene, total plant phenolics, and gallic acid contents and antioxidant capacity. They found that only papaya had a significant effect on stopping breast cancer cell growth. (International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition, May issue).
Papaya is a store-house of cancer-fighting lycopene. The intense orangey-pink colour of papaya means it is chock full of cancer fighting carotenoids. Not only beta carotene, but lycopene is found in abundance. The construction of lycopene makes it highly reactive towards oxygen and free radicals. Scientists at the University of Illinois think this anti-oxidant activity contributes to its effectiveness as a cancer fighting agent.
Epidemiological studies have indicated an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer risk. They showed that oral lycopene is highly bio available, accumulates in prostate tissue, and is localised in the nucleus of prostate epithelial cells. In addition to antioxidant activity, other experiments have indicated that lycopene induces cancer cell death, anti-metastatic activity, and the up-regulation of protective enzymes. Phase I and II studies have established the safety of lycopene supplementation. (Cancer Letter, October 8, 2008).
****
Isothiocyanates found in papaya restore the cell cycle to eliminate cancer.
Organo-sulphur compounds called isothiocyanates are found in papaya. In animal experiments, isothiocyanates protected against cancers of the breast, lung, colon, pancreas, prostate, as well as leukaemia, and they have the potential to prevent cancer in humans. Isothiocyanates have shown themselves capable of inhibiting both the formation and development of cancer cells through multiple pathways and mechanisms. (International Journal of
Oncology, October, 2008).
****
Researchers in Japan clarified the mechanisms of action in a type of isothiocyanate found in papaya known as BITC, which underlies the relationship between cell cycle regulation and appropriate cell death. When cancerous cells die on schedule, they are no longer a problem.
The researchers established that BITC exerted cancer cell killing effects that were greater in the proliferating cells than in the quiescent cells. Cancer cells that are proliferating are much more dangerous than cancer cells that are in a state of dormancy. (Forum of Nutrition, 2009).
****
Enzymes from papaya digest proteins including those that protect tumours.
The fruit and other parts of the papaya tree, also known as the paw paw tree, contain papain and chymopapain, powerful proteolytic enzymes that
facilitate chemical reactions in the body. They promote digestion by helping to break down proteins from food into amino acids that can be recombined to produce protein useable by humans. Proteolytic enzymes protect the body from inflammation and help heal burns. They do a good job of digesting unwanted scar tissue both on the skin and under its surface. Being a proteolytic enzyme, papain is able to destroy intestinal parasites, which are composedB mostly of protein. To rid the body of intestinal parasites, half a cup of papaya juice can be alternated each hour for twelve consecutive hours with the same amount of cucumber or green bean juice.
****
Research has shown that the physical and mental health of people is highly dependent on their ability to produce proteins they can use effectively.
However, as people age, they produce less of the enzymes needed to effectively digest proteins from food and free needed amino acids. They are left with excessive amounts of undigested protein which can lead to overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the intestinal tract, and a lack of available amino acids. Eating papaya after a meal promotes digestion, and helps prevent bloating, gas production, and indigestion. It is quite helpful after antibiotic use to replenish friendly intestinal bacteria that were the casualties in the war against the unwanted bacteria. When the intestinal tract is well populated with friendly bacteria, the immune system is strengthened, and can protect better against flu and cancer.
****
Papaya contains fibrin, another useful compound not readily found in the plant kingdom. Fibrin reduces the risk of blood clots and improves the quality of blood cells, optimising the ability of blood to flow through the
circulatory system. Fibrin is also important inB preventing stokes.
Proteolytic enzymes containing fibrin are a good idea for long plane rides to minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs. People who sit at a desk all day might want to use proteolytic enzymes too. Proteolytic enzymes are able to digest and destroy the defence shields of viruses, tumours, allergens, yeasts, and various forms of fungus. Once the shield is destroyed, tumours and invading organisms are extremely vulnerable and easily taken care of by the immune system. Undigested proteins can penetrate the gut and wind up in the bloodstream where they are treated by the immune system as invaders. If too many undigested proteins are floating around, the immune system becomes overburdened and unable to attend to the other tasks it wasB meant to do. Proteolytic enzymes can digest these rogue proteins, freeing up the immune system.
****
Let's ensure a slice of papaya every day in our diet. Papaya juice will be great.
Have a great day.....along with a slice of papaya.
