Why are Indian women turning anorexic?

That is a good question, but the answer could very well lie in another: are Indian women wanting to be skinny? While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, extreme gauntness has never been considered a paragon of attractiveness; still anorexia is increasing amongst Indian women. It all begins with adolescence, an age when girls start feeling insecure if they put on weight and thus begin to diet. The result can be anorexia, an eating disorder that has long-term and adverse impact on a girl's psychology that can refuse to part ways as she grows.

Obese women feel stigmatized by extra weight and because of lack of proper know-how on diet and exercise, the easiest route towards losing the same they feel is by staying away from food, thus triggering a nervous response. This leads to that characteristic state when their refusal to stay at even the minimum body weight becomes a norm with them. The fear of weight gain intensifies in their mind and the problem compounds with each passing day.

This problem has been further been exacerbated by widespread infiltration of television and social media into the average Indian woman's life. Both provide high exposure to 'thin females', an indication to ones who are not looking so that anything other than being thin is not acceptable.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, eating disorders primarily affect girls and women. There is also another aspect to it. Women who suffer from eating disorders have a tendency to be 'perfectionists' because the way media projects the world of women to them appears to be too perfectionist.

They develop a tendency to mimic and be look-alikes, an unwanted trait that wreaks havoc with their body and mind. Feelings of helplessness, low self-esteem and intense dissatisfaction with the way they look are come of common negative occurrences. Such women need to be evaluated and treatment options suggested.
