Did You Know This Particular Ant Species Plants, Fertilizes And Guards Its Own Coffee?

In an absolutely new kind of how-cool-is-that, scientists on the island of Fiji have discovered a type of ant that plants, fertilises and guards its own coffee crops.

Their agricultural know-how has been around for millions of years.

This particular breed is known as "Phildris nagasau".

They don't just harvest the nectar from the plants they sow, they also use the coffee plants later on as a place to live.

Susanne Renner, a botanist from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, further explains that the species are the first ants to build their own home.

These ants cultivate the seedling for weeks, even when it is initially of no direct benefit to them. Then after months of wait, usually three to five months, can they finally move into their new and aromatic abode.

"It's like a farmer tending to his crops," says Renner.

The scientist further claims that their behaviour is absolutely innate, The ants must know which seeds they are planting.
