[www.keralites.net] From Participation to spectatorship!

From participation to spectator-hood-The Pranayama University

Suppose a city dweller, who is living in the most luxurious flat, is dropped into a very thick and lush forest hundreds of miles away from the nearest town. He will simply die because of terror. Or he may frantically try for rescue. While being so terror stricken suppose he sees a forest dweller very happily smiling at him. Why is it that the supposed savage is happily smiling while this scientist with a PhD is paralyzed by fear? Because, his PhD has made him a spectator of nature, after cutting him away from nature. He has no courage to face his own subject matter of his PhD. His is the knowledge of the map, of the symbols, not the experience and feeling of reality. The major part of his anatomy, the forest has been cut away from him. He is just a broken piece of the great physical body-the forest.

The forest dweller on the other hand is the forest itself smiling at this doctor. The so called savage is happy and confident. The lions, tigers, snakes etc do not terrify him. Because, he can SMELL them. His hormonal and nervous systems automatically alert him. HE IS NOT A SPECTATOR BUT A PART OF THE FOREST. His Theology is his experience which translated into his autonomous nervous system and his thoughts are governed by the accurate information which feed his hormones. He is the forest.

Technology and Engineering are first separating us or cutting us away physically from nature and converting us into spectators. We strive for PhDs by converting ourselves more and more into spectators and in the process distancing ourselves from nature. We need the map knowledge approach consisting of definitions, scopes, rival theories..., without first hand feeling. We cannot automatically smell knowledge  which triggers our nervous and hormonal systems. We get struck in analysis, distance our body from nature and ultimately need.... dialysis.
