If you are experiencing any of the following... palpitations, short ness of breath, nerve problems, difficulty while walking, bad vision ­ take a chill pill. It may just be the absence of a vitamin pill. Sometimes, the most alarming symptoms are caused by the most disarming of reasons ­ a shortage of a vitamin or a mineral or simply because your diet may be too protein-rich or fat-de prived. Based on what my clients come to me with, I'd like to focus on two very prominent vitamin deficiencies, and discuss what they cause and how you can fight it.

VITAMIN D

The sheer number of clients that walk in with low Vitamin D levels, are astounding. It's become something of an epidemic. I'm willing to bet that every alternate person on this planet has some sort of vita min D deficiency. And that's not a good thing. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with asthma in children, impaired bone health, in creased risk of cardiovascular-related fatalities, cognitive difficul ties in older adults, and even cancer.

Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is made by your body on its exposure to sunlight.While it is also found in a few foods like egg yolk and fish oils, it's still deficient in most people and it's best to address this lack with a simple supplement that is readily available. But not without your doctor's go-ahead.

Vitamin D supplements are available in pill and sachet form.But if you have been prescribed sachets, dissolve them in milk, not water and then drink it. Some vitamins are fat-soluble and not water soluble, and milk is a much better catalyst for absorption of the vita min by your body.

VITAMIN B12

You'd be surprised at the list of symptoms e you could possibly have should this vital vitamin be slow in your body. Apart from palpitations, nerve problems and shortness of breath, symptoms of B12 deficiency include pale skin, depression, memory loss, hair loss and even behavioural changes. Suddenly, this vitamin is not so innocuous after all.

B12 deficiencies are especially common in those following a vegan diet because this vitamin is found in dairy and non-vegetarian diets. Those who have dairy, meat, poultry, seafood and eggs have far greater chances of staving off a B12 deficiency.

Low levels of B12 can be triggered by various other co-existing conditions in your body like pernicious anaemia, heavy drinking, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease, and other conditions that prevent your body from absorbing the vitamin.Having said that, taking care of this deficiency can be as simple as taking a pill.

DON'T SELF-MEDICATE

However, no matter what your deficiency, it's vital that you don't self-diagnose or self-medicate. Your doctor must be involved in the process right from the begin ning and only heshe should prescribe the vitamins needed for your body.
