Higher Interest rate to NRE Deposits extended upto  28th February,2014

The Reserve Bank of India has allowed banks to offer a higher deposit rate to non-residents till February 28. In August last year, following  sharp depreciation of the rupees against the dollar, the central bank deregulated interest rate on Non-Resident Rupee (NRE) deposits for maturity of three years and above. Earlier, banks were allowed to offer interest rate upto the domestic deposit rate of comparable maturity.

"On a review and in order to give banks some time, it has been decided to extend the above dispensation till February 28, 2014," RBI said.

In addition, the central bank also said banks could offer Libor plus 400 bps on FCNR(B) for maturity between 3 and 5 years, till February 28. The ceiling was hiked by 100 bps in August too.

Agastya Foundation, founded by Ramji Raghavan, today works in 12 states, providing innovative science education through 80 mobile science labs, 35 science centers, and a science park situated on a 172-acre campus in Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, about 125 km from Bangalore.
Ramji states that Agastya has touched the lives of over one million children and 30,000 teachers since its establishment in 1999.

Their projects benefit children in rural and urban areas. Underprivileged children are also benefitted. The various programs foster creative thinking, application of knowledge, team work, and leadership skills among the children.

Agastya works with a team of 500 full time employees and 300 teachers.

Equipped with arts, ecology, science and mathematics labs, their vans travel far and wide giving hands-on science education to children. They cover couple of government schools daily. Each session extends to 2-3 hours and in a day around 50-100 simple experiments are demonstrated to the children.

Ramji Raghavan was Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions in Citibank back in 1993, and later set up his own business in New York, returned to India to start a school, but ended up setting up 'Agastya Foundation,' an educational trust that promotes scientific temper and the spirit of enquiry among children in the age group of 6-18 years.
Agastya had one science van in Bihar. Former President Abdul Kalam was so impressed with its service that he donated one of his prize moneys to Agastya for buying more vans to be used in Bihar.

[www.keralites.net] Story: Make the Right Effort

Story: Make the Right Effort

This is the story of the giant ship engine that failed. The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom.

Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man searched into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. instantly, the engine lurched into life got started.

He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed! A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for £10,000.

"What?!" the owners exclaimed. "He hardly did anything!"
So they wrote the old man a note saying "Please send us an itemised bill."
The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer …..£2.00
Knowing where to hammer..£9,998.00

Total £10,000

Moral of The Story:
Effort itself is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life,
'Makes all the difference'.  So often we see people striving, working and making effort tirelessly, often for years only for them to later on realise that they were all misplaced and how they wish they had spent the time and effort on something more fruitful.  This reminds me of a quote I once read a long time ago:

"My worry for you is not that you fail to succeed, but that you succeed in the wrong thing."

An example that spring to mind which I have heard from our scholars is that people strive to do a lot of good a'maal but fail to refrain from committing sins, and they explained this point by using the example of a petrol tank with a hole in the bottom, we keep on filling it with petrol, little realising our loss of fuel from the hole in the tank.

May Allah give us the ability to reflect, learn and act on the above.

Subject: HALF MAN HALF TREE

This Is Just 4 General Knowledge.

tFun & Info @ Keralites.net

32 year old Dede Kosawa, also known as 'Tree Man', is

one of the world's most extraordinary people. He lives in

a remote village in Indonesia with his two children, trying

to care for them. Dede, a former fisherman, has an incredible

skin condition: he has root like structures growing out of

his body – branches that can grow up to 5cm a year and

which protrude from his hands and feet, and

welts covering his whole body.

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net

He is known locally as 'Tree Man' and his condition has

baffled local doctors for 20 years. In an attempt to earn a

living to support his family, he is part of a circus troupe,

displaying his 'Tree Man' limbs along with others afflicted

with skin deformities in 'freak' shows.

Dr Anthony Gaspari, a world expert in skin conditions from

the University of Maryland travels to Indonesia to attempt

to diagnose 'Tree Man' Dede's mysterious condition. He takes

skin samples for biopsies back in the USA. What will he discover?

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net

We go on an intimate journey with the extraordinary

'Tree Man' Dede, as he tries to eek out a living in a circus

troupe to support his family, and as he is given medical help

by Dr Gaspari. The identification and possible cure of his condition,

could change his whole life.

Half way across the world, in Romania, farmer Ion Toader

is discovered to have a similar extraordinary 'Tree Man' condition,

with growths all over his hands. He has not been able to drive a

tractor for five years. A Romanian surgeon offers to give him
